Springtime on Martha’s Vineyard

If you survived winter on Martha’s Vineyard, spring is your reward. Sure, the there’s a serenity to a cold, solo hike along Lucy Vincent’s windswept beach. A peaceful repose to the trails on Kings Highway where spindly grey trees and moss covered rocks may be your only company. And the knowing glance of a stranger because you share this beautiful island through all the seasons.

Then you spring forward, and find yourself peeling off layers. The longer days and warm weather mean more time outside. Memorial Day marks the start, then you just might blink and find it in your rearview. So savor every minute of spring on Martha’s Vineyard.

Before you fire up the grill, remember to celebrate the season safely.

Martha’s Vineyard has a significant and growing problem with tick-borne illnesses, particularly due to the spread of the lone star tick whose bite carries Alpha-Gal Syndrome (AGS), an allergy to red meat and other mammalian products like pork, lamb and dairy. Martha’s Vineyard Hospital reported just two cases in 2020, and by September 2024 that number had skyrocked to 365.
